Favourite Shade of Grey

Every girl friend I know has read 50 Shades of Grey so this is my interpretation of the umm, titillating trilogy, to say the least!

And I know I know, I’ve been away for a long time, I’m still well and alive – I’ve spent my absence on other personal interests and taking care of some copyright issues pertaining to the unauthorized use of my images on the web.

Anyway, serious stuff aside, I don’t know how I’ve never thought of this combination before – a light neutral grey with a sparkly coat of holo that has the same color base! Above shows 1 coat of Orly Mirror Mirror and 1 coat of OPI DS Coronation, taken under my table lamp.

Orly MM has been the most used polish in my collection – I’m seriously considering buying another bottle. Speaking of which, I’m not sure if it’s an achievement of restraint or a failure as a nail polish girl, that I haven’t bought ANY new polish since my last post! I just decided that my blog isn’t going to be a plain ol’ nail swatch blog, it’s going to be a nail art and polish combos kind of blog :)

Disclaimer: Unless of course, I chance upon an awesome creme polish that would speak for itself, or a polish chock-full of glitter and flakey bits that it really doesn’t need anything else!!

Right – back to the Grey manicure! I think grey is a nice shade – it’s neutral so it matches basically any color, it’s muted so it doesn’t take attention away from other colors you have on, and its an understated color that can go from casual to chic. I didn’t want to coat on too much holo to hide the Grey base, I think these two polishes complement each other really well!

The picture above was taken with flash, and I have shiny cuticles from the jojoba oil I rubbed on. OPI DS Coronation is a sparse kind of holo polish, not a linear holo as shown in the previous post. I like all kinds of holo polishes so it doesn’t matter, I can stare at my nails all day - especially in the sun! They’re glorious in the sunlight.

And I’m sure the nail polish universe would attest to this – the blurrier the shot, the sparklier the holo manicure is. Yeah, like you didn’t know that!

I also thought I’d throw in another manicure I did a long time ago, back when I was still in college. It’s a coral-orange gradient manicure, and I used the sponged method I’d talked about in previous posts.

I was hesitant on posting these shots since they were taken on a bus and my hands were moving all the time, but I did good huh? If you didn’t know the difference between the colors Coral and Orange, this picture shows it.

For the base of the nail I used Color Club Coral Cascade, and at the tips I used OPI In My Back Pocket. My nails were pretty short when I did it so the gradient is more obvious, but I like the way the color graduated (Ha, pun) from coral to orange, especially on my thumb nail – the color change looks soft and natural.

I was also thinking of doing a black to nude gradient but I would have to practice more for that!

Mega (Glitter) Post

I was feeling restful and inspired when I woke up this morning, and considering that my haul from Chez Delaney came last night, I had the strong urge to try out all the glitters!

Now as you know, sometimes the glitter in polishes that we buy are not glittery enough. An alternative would be to buy your own glitter and do with it what you will. And this post is what I did with mine! Let me introduce:

L-R: Octagon glitter in Purple that flashes baby blue, and Blue that flashes green.

L-R: Rhombus (i.e. diamond-shaped) glitter in Green and Silver (kinda holo)

L-R: Rhombus studs (not glitter) in Black and Silver

L-R: Mixed silver glitter (3 sizes of glitter), and triangular emerald green rhinestones

I’d like to note here that all the above glitter were only 1 Euro each!

Except for the polish that I bought – called Hefesto from the Speciallita collection “No Olimpo” (9.90 €), which is basically a range of holographic polishes. Hefesto is a holographic topcoat, and unlike ChG Fairy Dust that’s mainly glitter, the holographic particles in Hefesto are much smaller and goes on very smoothly.

It has a wide brush – much wider and thicker than OPI’s brushes – and doesn’t take much to have an even coat of holo awesomeness on your nails. Pity about the volume though – it’s only 6ml, less than half of a standard OPI bottle. But it’s okay, let’s see what this polish can do! I wanted to show the difference that Hefesto would make on standard colors, so I made a couple of gif images. The result is much finer than ChG Fairy Dust.

Clockwise from index to thumb: OPI Monsooner or Later; Zoya Creamy; OPI Not Like the Movies; Zoya Yasmeen; Essie Licorice

I think it looks best over black! I wanted to show you guys how Hefesto looks with different angles of light so above is my thumb in slow motion – I MUCH prefer this combination than even the original My Private Jet.

NEXT UP: A Summery Tribal(ish) Manicure!

Now, I really like the studs – they’re a little raised from the center but flat enough to stick on your nails. And I like it against such a bright color – Zoya Layla is almost a neon color that dries semi-matte and is bright enough to notice from afar.

At first I wanted to use the black studs cos they were edgier, but as I applied the SV topcoat, the black BLED out and got dragged by the topcoat, revealing a purplish stud instead. I was beyond disappointed, but will try with other topcoats before I deport it to the trash. The silver studs work fine with topcoats though, luckily I bought it in 2 colors!

This is without a topcoat – there are SO many designs you can do with these studs ;)

NEXT UP: Mermaid Scales Manicure

I was admiring the opalescent octagon glitters – they are so very pretty and large! According to the website, these are XL-sized ones and I rarely see glitters as big as this in regular polishes, probably because they’d be hard to pick up with a brush. I don’t have that problem since mine are in a ziplock bag! Hehehe

Since they’re not very opaque glitters, I had to have a base color that complemented the blue. Above shows 2 coats of OPI Ski Teal We Drop under my table lamp.

I waited until the polish was semi-dry before I patted the glitter on with a finger. How do you know if it’s semi-dry? When you touch it, it leaves a fingerprint but you don’t get polish on your finger – that’s when it’s sticky enough to hold on to glitter and not wet enough to drag.

I was admiring this manicure from an arm’s length and as my fingers moved, the large glitters shifted in colors and I almost died admiring it.

Here you can see the green in the blue – pretty isn’t it? As my nail bed is curved, it was a little tricky to pat the glitter on smoothly so it didn’t leave any glitter corners jutting out. This batch of glitters was quite malleable though, so that wasn’t much of a problem.

NEXT UP: Glittery Pine Manicure

After such a blue manicure, I needed some green. They are my two favorite colors <3

If it isn’t obvious enough in the picture, I tried to arrange the green rhombus glitter in a triangular design, and when I was done with my nails, it reminded me of a pine tree. So this is a glittery pine manicure.

Polishes used – NYX Lux Green topped with with NYX Enchanted Forest

Although I would have liked it, the green glitter isn’t prismatic – it shifts colors from light to dark green, as in the picture. It’s pretty though :)

NEXT UP: Glitterfest Manicure

I was SO excited when I saw that Chez Delaney had multi-sized glitter in a pack! It reminded me of OPI Servin’ Up Sparkle – a polish that was definitely not sparkly because the glitter wasn’t dense enough. Case in point:

“No, I will not use this polish.”

Amen to this. I don’t care if you can’t see the base color, all I want is glitter.

Surrounding my cuticles is not dirt, it’s the micro silver glitter I couldn’t really get off without wrecking the manicure. It’ll fall off eventually, or with some soap. The glitter’s in the background, on a piece of paper talking about how women who smoke during pregnancy may end up with antisocial children. You don’t say?

As I was saying, the multi-glitter comes in 3 sizes – the XL octagon glitter, octagon medium sized glitter, and square micro glitter. It’s not superbly holographic although you can catch a glimpse of rainbow colors at certain angles. It’s mainly silver, but that’s okay.

See my pinky? There’s the rainbow-ish angle. Because this glitter pack had different sizes (especially the micro glitter) it was difficult putting the remaining glitter back into the pack. I had glitter all over my fingers and even in my hair.

The white I used in this manicure is Orly Au Champagne, but it’s nothing you should really care about, glitter takes center stage in this post!

NEXT UP: Shattered Glass Manicure

And lastly to round up my mega post, here’s my favorite look.

I really really like this one. It’s simple and sparkly. The silver rhombus glitter flashes different colors and it really IS like shattered glass.

Base is my favorite nude (although Essie Not Just a Pretty Face is a huge contender), OPI Tickle My France-y. This look is chic and fun at the same time!

I couldn’t pick up the glitter with my regular bead tweezers – they were too small and too thin, so I used my dotting tool, dipped it slightly in vaseline (which is clear but sticky) and then lightly tapped the glitter on piece by piece on the semi-dry polish. No dents or smudges, that’s how I like it.

Okay that’s all, I spent about 6 hours doing the looks and uploading and blogging and stuff :) thanks for reading!

rough shots, spectacular show

If Lady Gaga came to Singapore and I didn’t go see her show, I wouldn’t call myself a fan. According to my iTunes, I’ve played ‘Paparazzi’ well over 150 times, among other of her songs. My current favorite is ‘Hair’, and I went CRAZY when she sang it, I was totally into it and I’m SO glad I went to the show with 2 of my closest and oldest friends.

A first of many firsts, here’s a shot of my friend’s nails – weird cos it was something that I wanted to do too, to have GAGA on my nails. We think alike a lot, I love her!

I forgot to ask, but I could tell the base color was a shimmery purple, with blue studded crystals and a red studded heart on the thumb. She always has something fun on her nails!

And what did I do? Well at first I wanted to do a glow-in-the-dark manicure, but I wanted something blood red. It worked for the best since my other friend brought glow sticks! Considering I’ve never blogged about this color before, I went for it! Above is a sloppy shot of 2 fresh coats of OPI Monsooner or Later, a bright cherry tomato red. I love these reds, I feel sexy and empowered in them. Of course, I had to bling it up!

I patted loose bar glitter on my nails when the polish dried, and applied a thick coat of SV after. It’s super blingy, and I got many compliments about my nails, even from strangers at the concert! Although I wouldn’t really label them as strangers since we all love Gaga!

At the back is a pair of novelty Gaga shades my friend brought along – although you can’t see much wearing them lol. I had so much fun!

Here’s a shot of the stage before the concert started. Some DJ played fantastic club music for about an hour-ish until Gaga finally arrived in her castle, i.e. the Kingdom of Fame. She is SO theatrical, I loved the extravagance and the pains taken into pulling off such an awesome show!

I know it sucks, it was the best my iPhone could manage, but there’s the 4 storey castle! It was the best night ever! I danced till my body was aching all over the morning after, but I felt amazing. I loved singing to her, I love you LADY GAGA!

Galaxy Nails #1

I’ve long wanted to try out galaxy nails especially after watching The Avengers, where there were scenes in outer space and it looked über-cool. I was scratching my head as to which colors to use – all those that I’ve seen online use a black base, sponged creme colors, and a compulsory holographic top coat (i.e. ChG Fairy Dust).

So I decided to go in a different direction. Instead of black I used a smoky blue-grey, and rather than using creme colors, I used only shimmers and/or glitters.

I think my camera hates ChG Fairy Dust – it always freaks out like this the first time I try to take a photo! But here you can see how awesome ChG FD is.

Taken under my table lamp, I love how it turned out on my thumb nail – it closely resembles a nebula, and I don’t know what it is with me lately, I like seeing pictures of stars and galaxies. This is my current wallpaper:

Credits to my favorite high quality wallpaper site: InterfaceLIFT

Obviously, these were taken in the sunlight. Finally! (IKR.) Although I couldn’t take any direct sunlight shots, it was really bright this afternoon so this will have to do!

Colors I used in chronological order:

  • Base: OPI Suzi Skis in the Pyrenees
  • Sponged color 1: OPI Movin’ Out (duochrome purple shimmer! <3)
  • Sponged color 2: OPI Catch Me in Your Net (more green than it was blue on nails)
  • Sponged color 3: OPI Diva of Geneva (similar to Movin’ Out, but more opaque)
  • Sponged color 4: NYX Enchanted Forest (very green glitter with gold bits)
  • Holographic coat: ChG Fairy Dust

With the combination of colors, my first attempt at galaxy nails was more purple and green than anything else. And I probably should have left out some parts of the nail un-sponged so it’s more realistic looking. Anyway, when I look at my nails now, it reminds me of the Orly Cosmic FX Collection! I bought the entire collection, but got bored with it and sold it.

I prefer my own customized galaxy nails :)

tranquil

My ideal vacation getaway would be on a white sandy beach with crystal clear waters and my own beach hut where I could just chill out all day. Seeing that my last class in college ended a couple weeks ago, there really is no better time to enjoy a holiday than now! Hanging out with old friends, barbecuing seafood by the beach, and reminiscing over (nonalcoholic) drinks after.

Anyway, today’s manicure is inspired by the colors of ocean waters.

I did a sponged gradient manicure again! I purposely made it look a little grainy (cos of you know, the sand.) and just LOVED how it turned out!

Colors used were (from the base of the nail up): Ogre-the-Top Blue, Fly, and Mermaid’s Tears, with Alpine Snow as the white base.

Taken under my table lamp, with my phone camera. Not bad eh? I know it’s a faux pas, but until I get an SD card USB adapter, this will have to do for now!

Imagine you’re at the beach, take a breath, and soak it in. I feel one with the seas.

sapphire in the snow

And I’m back.

April has been emotionally draining for me, but as with everything that happens in life, it goes on. Today’s post is dedicated to my grandma.

A sapphire in the snow, she was.

Base is OPI Sapphire in the Snow, splattered with OPI Alpine Snow, and loose pieces of holographic bar glitter sprinkled on the white, to make it sparkle like glistening snow.

Taken under my table lamp, Sapphire in the Snow is a dark blue-purple (i.e. blurple), and is one of the nicest blurples I own. It’s also been discontinued – I remember because I had to pay a little more when I bought it a couple years ago. It dries to a smooth creme finish, and looks like a dark purple from afar.

It’s been raining hard and often so I wasn’t able to do any sunlight shots. I wonder if the effect would’ve been better if I’d used white as the base and sapphire in the snow as the splatter instead?

Update: 29 Apr ’12

Thanks for visiting my blog! I’ve received emails enquiring about my ‘absence’ since early this month, and well, I haven’t been posting lately as my family has been coping with the demise of my grandmother – a strong, entrepreneurial, capable, and admirable woman who almost lived to see a century pass. She was 98. Travel well, grandma.

I’ll resume posting soon!
